Fleetwood Town produced one of the biggest shocks in Carabao Cup history by eliminating Arsenal after a penalty shootout. The EFL confirmed that 84 places separated the clubs in the English football pyramid.
FROM THE OPENER TO THE SHOOTOUT
Aaron Loupalo-Bi put Fleetwood ahead in the 21st minute. Viktor Gyökeres equalised after the interval, but Fleetwood resisted the pressure and forced the tie to penalties.
Arsenal finished with ten players after Max Dowman was sent off late on. In the shootout, goalkeeper Jay Lynch saved Bruno Guimarães’s penalty before Conor Haughey converted the kick that sent the hosts through.
A HISTORIC QUARTER-FINAL
Fleetwood have reached the competition’s quarter-finals for the first time. The result is final and the qualification has been confirmed by the competition organiser.
