A QUARTER-FINAL WITHOUT PRECEDENT
The National Bank Open in Montreal has produced the first quarter-final lineup in ATP Tour history in which all eight players were born in the 2000s, the ATP confirmed on 10 August 2026.
Ben Shelton, Learner Tien, Jakub Mensik, Arthur Fils, Luciano Darderi, Rafael Jodar, Brandon Nakashima and Daniel Merida make up the last eight at the Masters 1000 event. Jodar is the youngest at 19, while Nakashima is the oldest at 25.
The previous mark was set only three weeks earlier in Estoril, where seven of the eight quarter-finalists had been born in the 2000s. Montreal is also the first ATP event since Paris in 2007 to have every quarter-finalist aged 25 or younger.
SHELTON IS THE HIGHEST-RANKED PLAYER LEFT
Defending champion Shelton, the world No. 10, is the highest-ranked player remaining. He will face Mensik, who leads their head-to-head series 2–1.
The other quarter-finals are Jodar against Fils, Nakashima against Darderi and Tien against Merida. The lineup includes two former Next Gen ATP Finals champions: Nakashima, the 2022 winner, and Tien, who lifted the trophy in December 2025.
For Merida, the Montreal run guarantees a first appearance inside the world's Top 50 when the rankings are updated. Jodar, meanwhile, has risen from outside the Top 500 a year ago to a career-high No. 15 after winning his first ATP title in Marrakech.
A CLEAR GENERATIONAL SIGNAL
The record does not predict who will win the tournament, but it shows that the generational shift is now visible across an entire Masters 1000 closing stage. With eight players spanning six different birth years, Montreal has moved beyond a sequence of isolated upsets to present a complete snapshot of the sport's emerging generation.
