Lando Norris won the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing 15.080 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. Kimi Antonelli secured third place for Mercedes, while Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed the top five after a five-second penalty for Hamilton for speeding in the pit lane.
Norris started from pole, but Oscar Piastri took the lead at Turn 2 on the opening lap. The two McLarens then became locked in a strategic contest through the first half of the race, with Norris reporting stronger pace while following his team-mate.
The decisive swing came after Piastri's second stop. His contact with Carlos Sainz in traffic, combined with Norris' rapid laps in clear air, gave the reigning champion the net advantage after the pit-stop cycle. Piastri later stopped on track with an apparent gearbox problem and did not finish.
The Virtual Safety Car triggered by Piastri's retirement also shaped the podium. Verstappen and Antonelli stayed out to inherit second and third, while Ferrari brought both cars in for another stop.
The result matters beyond a single weekend. It is the first victory of the 2026 season for both Norris and McLaren, and it arrives immediately before Formula 1's summer break. McLaren's pace was convincing, but the way the contest between its drivers unfolded shows that managing future races may prove as important as the speed of the car.
