A new development on the international stage could alter plans for a NATO Summit in Albania during 2027.
Spanish newspaper “El Mundo” reports that doubts within the Alliance have increased significantly over whether the next meeting of NATO leaders will take place in Tirana as previously expected.
According to diplomatic sources cited by the newspaper, the chances of holding the meeting next year are now considered “very, very slim”, while the possibility that no regular NATO summit will be organized in 2027 has also been raised.
One of the main reasons reportedly concerns efforts within the Alliance to avoid new confrontations between US President Donald Trump and several NATO allies.
The report also raises questions regarding Albania’s actual level of defence spending and its progress toward meeting the Alliance’s financial targets.
The latest development is particularly significant because only a few months ago NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the Alliance’s next leaders’ summit would take place in Albania, although the exact date still had to be decided.
The Albanian government had also previously announced that preparations were underway to host what would be one of the most important international events ever held in the country.
However, the latest reporting suggests that the situation may have changed and that discussions are taking place over whether another full leaders’ summit is necessary in 2027.
Should international developments require an emergency meeting, NATO leaders could potentially meet under a different format or at the Alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.
So far, NATO has not issued an official announcement cancelling a summit in Albania. The latest information therefore remains based on diplomatic reporting, with any final decision expected to be formally announced by the Alliance.
The issue is expected to attract considerable attention in Albania, as Prime Minister Edi Rama had previously presented the prospect of hosting a NATO Summit in Tirana as a historic moment for the country.
