A COMEBACK WITH WEIGHT IN WASHINGTON
Terence Atmane turned a difficult opening set into the most consequential result of the day at the Mubadala DC Open. The Frenchman defeated sixth seed Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and four minutes, according to the ATP Tour’s official report.
Tiafoe had won all three of their previous meetings this year, including a first-round match at Wimbledon. In Washington, however, Atmane stayed composed after dropping the opener, raised his level in the second set and secured the decisive service break at 4-4 in the final set.
WHY THE RESULT MATTERS
Atmane arrived at the tournament with only one victory from his previous eight tour-level matches. Beating Tiafoe, a Top 20 player and one of the home crowd’s leading attractions, immediately changes the tone of his North American hard-court campaign.
It was the Frenchman’s second victory over a Top 20 opponent in 2026. The result is more than an upset on the draw sheet: it reflects Atmane’s ability to adjust during the match, absorb the atmosphere and execute the decisive points late in the third set.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Atmane will face Alejandro Tabilo in the second round after the Chilean defeated Tallon Griekspoor in three sets. That match will show whether the victory over Tiafoe was a single high point or the start of a more sustained run in Washington.
For Tiafoe, the early exit ends a strong sequence at this event. The American had reached at least the quarter-finals in each of the previous four editions, making Atmane’s result more significant for the shape of the draw.
