STATUS: REPORTED AGREEMENT, NOT AN OFFICIAL TRANSFER

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for Carlos Baleba, according to reports from Reuters, Sky Sports and The Guardian.

The package is reported to include £65 million guaranteed and up to £5 million in add-ons. Brighton are also reported to have secured a sell-on clause, although its precise terms have not been disclosed.

WHAT IS BEING REPORTED

Reuters wrote on 21 August 2026 that a source close to Manchester United had confirmed the agreement. Sky Sports and The Guardian reported the same financial package and said the Cameroon midfielder was expected to undergo a medical.

Baleba, 22, joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 and has developed into a central midfielder capable of covering ground, winning possession and carrying play forward.

WHAT REMAINS UNCONFIRMED

At the time of publication, Manchester United and Brighton had not issued an official announcement completing the transfer. The clubs had also not published final confirmation of the medical, signature, registration, contract length or financial clauses.

The move is therefore described as a reported agreement rather than a completed transfer. A planned medical or exchanged paperwork does not replace an official club announcement.

WHY UNITED WANT HIM

Baleba would add energy, pressing power and defensive coverage to a midfield United have rebuilt during the summer. Reports place him after the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, making him one of the club’s most significant investments in that department.

The reported fee makes the agreement one of the biggest recent Premier League moves of the window. His role, squad number and possible debut date will become clear only after official confirmation.
