TWO TOP-10 EXITS IN ONE NIGHT

Botic van de Zandschulp and Thiago Agustin Tirante produced the two biggest results of the Montreal National Bank Open second round, eliminating Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz respectively on 5 August 2026.

Van de Zandschulp defeated World No. 6 Medvedev 6–3, 7–6(5) in one hour and 39 minutes. The Dutchman moved 3–0 ahead in the second set, lost that advantage as Medvedev forced a tie-break, then regained control when the decisive points arrived.

Official ATP statistics show that the 30-year-old converted six of his eight break-point opportunities. It was his first win in five meetings with Medvedev and the ninth Top-10 victory of his career. He will face Hubert Hurkacz in the next round.

TIRANTE STOPS FRITZ

Later the same night, Tirante beat World No. 8 Taylor Fritz 7–5, 6–3 in 88 minutes. The Argentine struck 19 winners and dropped only one point behind his first serve, winning 25 of 26.

Fritz arrived in Montreal only 48 hours after winning the ATP 500 title in Washington. He received medical treatment during the second set and struggled with his movement in the closing stages. That provides important context without diminishing a complete performance from Tirante, who stayed focused and controlled the key exchanges.

For the 25-year-old, it was a third career victory over a Top-10 opponent. He has now reached the third round at three consecutive Masters 1000 events, following runs in Madrid and Rome.

JODAR CONTINUES HIS RISE

Rafael Jodar, 19, also advanced to the third round by beating Corentin Moutet 4–6, 6–1, 6–3. The Spaniard, who lost his first ATP 500 final to Fritz in Washington, sits 11th in the live race for the ATP Finals and will next play Lorenzo Musetti.

WHY IT MATTERS

The two exits immediately alter the section of the draw previously occupied by Medvedev and Fritz. They also underline the physical cost of the rapid move from Washington to Montreal, while lower-ranked players are taking their opportunity at a Masters 1000 event carrying major ranking points and prize money.
